When you look at much film and recruiting profiles as I do, you start to notice a lot of different variations of the same thing. It really doesn't matter what you have around the film, I'm still going to click on the first film I see in order to get as quick of an evaluation as I can. This falls under the "make their job as easy as possible" category. If we are making college coaches search everywhere and beyond for a highlight link, or your graduation year or whatever else that should be simple, you're making it harder to get yourself recruited.

I will point out here that I know 0, that's right ZERO, college coaches that DO NOT want to see highlight film. Do they want to see more than just a highlight film? Yes! But I know very few coaches (zero) actually that have the time to watch 100 athletes each week and evaluate them each for 5-10 minutes of full-match film. So, being evaluated through watching your highlight film is the BEST way. If I don't think you're good enough after watching 2-3 minutes of your BEST, then 5-10 minutes of your average volleyball isn't going to change my mind. I also believe that college coaches don't have the time to realistically watch a "full-match" film of athletes and there are several ways that you can give them what they are looking for without sharing 30 minutes of film; but that's for a latter date and time. Also, for any of my college coaching friends that are reading this, please feel free to let me know if you disagree with me about highlight film and we can discuss :)

Right now, the biggest issue I am seeing with highlights is on Hudl. Now, Hudl is a great system, lots of good tools and certainly can benefit the athlete with when it comes to creating highlights and coaches being able to watch their film. But, the biggest downside is there is a huge amount of stuff to sift through in order to find an athletes best film or the film that is best going to help me evaluate her. The problem is that the little "highlight" they create for you is for the most part garbage. You got 2 kills in a game; one of them is an off-speed shot because you mostly missed the ball and the other is a ball that was going out of bounds and then got touched (I'm actually NOT making this up). Those clips are not going to help you get recruited! Can the clips that Hudl makes for you help you find the clips that you need to find in order to make your own highlight? Yes.

You must do the work to get yourself recruited. I said this a lot a few weeks ago while meeting with a bunch of club teams, but "There are a lot of great tools out there that can make the process smoother in some ways, but they do not replace the work you must do and effort that you must put into your recruiting process." So, please be willing to put in the amount of work that actually takes to get recruited. That includes spending some time on the computer, finding clips and editing them together. That includes sending emails to coaches, usually several, to make sure they know how interested you are in their program. Spend a few minutes cleaning up your Hudl page in order to help streamline college coaches to your BEST STUFF.

If you want a GREAT example of what a highlight, made by an athlete, can look like, then go check out Hanna's highlights on her Hudl page. They are awesome, she really did a fantastic job this fall, putting her film out there for coaches to see. CLICK HERE
