Last time I looked specifically at where Texas athletes play relative to the Power 5 Conferences. This time I wanted to look at the Next 5 conferences. That is, the rest of the FBS schools to see if we see any change in the amount of athletes from the state of Texas in where they play. For a refresher, go check out the "By The Numbers" blog about the P5 schools HERE

Here are 5 conferences we are talking about:

Conference USA (CUSA) Sunbelt

American Athletic Conference (AAC)

Mountain West Conference (MWC)

Mid-American Conference (MAC)

First I want to note that CUSA, the Sunbelt and AAC have schools in Texas. The MWC has only 1(one) school in a border state with Texas and that school has the most athletes from Texas in the conference; New Mexico - 5.

Totals:

With 982 volleyball athletes in the 5 conferences in total, 189 of them are from the state of Texas

189/982 = 19%

CUSA and the Sun Belt have the highest percentage of rosters with Texas athletes with 28% and 30% respectively.

The Sun Belt is really interesting as it is divided up into East/West Divisions. The West Division has all 4 Texas and Louisiana schools and generate 59 of the 66 athletes from Texas. That accounts for 97% of the athletes from Texas.

The Mountain West and MAC only have 9% and 1.5% of their rosters filled with Texas athletes. The MAC only has 3 athletes on rosters from Texas. The MWC only has 16 athletes from Texas on 6 rosters:

New Mexico - 5

Colorado State - 3

Wyoming - 3

Air Force - 3

UNLV - 1

San Diego State - 1

2 of the 3 athletes from Texas in the MAC go to the University of Ohio.

We see the same split in CUSA that we see in the Sun Belt. 89% of athletes in the conference are in the West Division where we have 5 schools from Texas/Louisiana. 79% of the athletes in the conference come those 5 schools:

Rice - 10

UTEP - 7

North Texas - 13

UTSA - 13

LA Tech - 7

No school in the East Division has more than 3 athletes.

Florida Atlantic - 3

Western Kentucky - 0

FIU - 0

If we look specifically at schools in Texas across all 5 conferences, we see that 120 of the 189 athletes from Texas are attending one of these schools in or around Texas (Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana).

120/189 = 63%

It would see that the overwhelming majority of Texas athletes are staying relatively close to home at the FBS level.
