I will always be an advocate for the D2 level in volleyball. It's a great community of coaches and includes a host of amazing and talented athletes. In my mind, every athlete should consider one or more D2 schools in their college recruiting process.
One reason is that as of right now, they will be some of the few coaches that are able to attend tournaments and qualifiers prior to April 15th of 2021. This means that if you want to get noticed by some college coaches this club season, you should be reaching out to them.
I don't want to get too much into all of the mythical vs real differences between D1 and D2 volleyball, but I will say that I think a lot of people are surprised when they actually look at what D2 schools have to offer. Great conferences, great travel, great facilities and an extremely high level of competition.
The structure of athletic scholarships can be a little bit confusing at times because it can be more complex. But the positives of D2 will certainly outweigh many of the negatives that people have created. With almost every aspect that you are looking for in a college experience, except maybe student population, you can find that at a D2 school somewhere. Many times the opportunities at D2 are greater than at the D1 level. While many people believe that D2 is just for "less talented" athletes, that isn't the case at all. The pool that D2 coaches are choosing from is at times large, but also extremely competitive. D2 also is not a place for your "safe school" because those coaches will just find an athlete that is more interested in their school than you are.
In reality, D2 can be an all around better fit for athletes. But, that just takes some digging and research to figure out. Their football games might not be on TV every Saturday afternoon, but there are plenty of D1 schools that are in the same position. Find what you are really interested in when it comes to your overall college experience and what you want to happen athletically and look at some D2 options. I really think that many of you will be surprised at what you find on the other end.
