I'm a big fan of social media. It's a lot of fun in the majority of instances; arguing about silly things aside. I see a lot of volleyball-only Instagram accounts for athletes. As a general rule, there's nothing wrong with posting on your volleyball social media accounts, but for the majority of athletes. What you need to understand is that social media is probably not doing what you would like it to do for your athlete's recruiting process.

What Families Typically Do

  • Create a volleyball only social media account

  • Post horizontal highlights

  • Post only highlights occasionally

  • Don't post anything interesting about yourself

Why It Feels Like It Should Work

  • You see a lot of other athletes on social media and they are getting recruited

  • Someone told you to do it

  • Other sports rely heavily on this form of recruiting

Why This Doesn't Work

  • Makes it challenging for college coaches to get in touch with you

  • A volleyball instagram account is going to do as much as a QR code will - very little

  • There isn't a real connection between social media and college recruiting

  • Relying on the algorithm to do your recruiting isn't the best idea

  • This might feel proactive, but it's a passive form of recruiting

  • College coaches are not on social media as much as you think!

What You Should Be Doing

Again, there's nothing wrong with using social media as a piece of your recruiting process. We actually encourage our athletes to do it as much as possible if it fits them - just remember to be doing the other things as well! Instagram and other social media platforms are all about content - if you aren't creating content then it becomes really hard for your posts

  • Optimize your bio on your social media platforms!

  • Show college coaches who you are off the court AND on the court

  • Google yourself and see what pops up - that's what college coaches are doing

  • IF college coaches "find" you on social media, can they easily find your contact information?

  • The algorithm isn't necessarily going to put you in front of the coaches you are wanting. You'll need to reach out to those schools directly.

  • Engage with school on your social media page!

  • If you aren't using your account, then it's not doing anything for you.
