I normally don't share other "recruiter's stuff", but I thought this story was too good NOT to share. I won't repeat the entire post for you, but there are several thoughts I have outside of the title for this blog post.
Good read, right?
This is a difficult task. It's important to remember that only about 4% of high school volleyball players play at the NCAA (college) level. That means that if your high school roster has 22 athletes on it, then 1...ONE of you is playing at the college level. It's also important to note that across the board in ALL Sports at the D1 and D2 level, only about 50% of athletes are on scholarship. You are up against a lot - it will NOT be easy.
Don't blame others. Be willing to do the work and be responsible for what you do and don't do. You can certainly have help, there's nothing wrong with that. I regularly speak with athletes and parents that have questions about the process while they are getting recruited by Power 5 and Top 50 programs. I would argue that help is needed in many circumstances. But in the end it's on you to be prepared for each situation along the way. It's why I tell families that you're never too young to start the process. Don't go into these recruiting situations blind.
Be willing to do the hard things. Nothing usually comes easy in recruiting. Be willing to send one more email; risk being aggressive and letting a coach know how interested you are. There are lots of tools out there and can aid you in the process, but they don't do the recruiting for you. Research the school...have specific questions prepared before hand...look at some schools that you normally wouldn't email...expand your list outside of your top 5 and find a school that will be a GREAT fit. Spend 10 minutes and instead of responding to snapchats, email a couple of college coaches.
I think you will be surprised at how YOUR process goes when you are willing and ready to take risks, do the hard things and make something happen for yourself.
