*Recruiting advice that is useful prior to each qualifier!
Triple Crown is one of the biggest recruiting weekends of the year. It still brings a TON of talent to Kansas City each year along with 100s of college coaches
1. Volleyball Tournament Emails Should Be Sent Days Before Triple Crown Starts
Timing is key when it comes to reaching out to college coaches. With just days before the tournament, sending emails early gives coaches enough time to familiarize themselves with you before they see you play.
Personalization is critical. Tailor each email to the specific coach and program as best as you can. Yes, this does take a little bit more time, but the more specific you make each email the more college coaches will feel your interest in their program..
Coaches are always busy and usually travel on the same days you do. Emails sent the day or night before a qualifier or a big tournament will often not get read until the next week. This means that if you are ONLY sending out this one email or if this is the first email to a school, then you might miss the opportunity to get in front of them.
2. Update Your University Athlete Account
Now is the perfect time to refresh your University Athlete account. College coaches DO use UA almost exclusively. Not every school uses it, as it can get expensive, but it is defintiely worth it to keep the info on that profile updated.
Things like your GPA, height, contact info, who college coaches should reach out to...all of this is beneficial for college coaches, but also important because you don't want camp invites or text messages going to a email address you no longer check.
You can also upload highlights and other info on your UA profile. Use this as a resource and tool as much as you can.
3. Be a Good Teammate and Be Coachable
Yes, college coaches are watching your talent and evaluating your skillset as a volleyball athlete. Here are some thing they can typically spend MORE time watching as evaluating:
How you interact with your team?
How you come on and off the court?
How much do you cheer for your teammates?
Do you make eye contact with your coach?
How well do you take feedback and instruction?
How do you communicate with your parents? - YES they do watch this!
Intangibles make a difference when it comes to recruiting. Physical metrics are usually easy to find. Getting the athlete AND the person college coaches are looking for can be more difficult.
Final Thoughts
Have fun this weekend! Triple Crown is a great tournament to particiapte in this club volleyball season. Control what you can control. Try your best to NOT focus on the college coaches around your courts or when they are coming . Focus on your teammates and competing; that's what college coaches want to see from you anyway!
