I'm always surprised, even though maybe I shouldn't be, at the amount of misunderstood information about recruiting out there. It's usually not the fault of parents or athletes. They are just getting bad information from bad sources. Sometimes it's not even on purpose!
Here's an example - A parent says that they didn't do anything in their recruiting process and it worked great for them. Then the other family goes, well recruiting will just happen and we don't need to do anything. Now sometimes those athletes can still get recruited, but chances are those families are missing out on opportunities because they are mirroring an example that isn't the norm.
One of the big things that I run into with younger athletes (freshmen and sophomores) is that I'm telling them to reach out to schools and communicate with college coaches. Sometimes, these athletes are already getting camp invites, questionnaires and possible other information sent to them. I ask them and suggest that they respond to the emails they are getting and keep in touch with those college coaches. I even give examples of how several athletes over the years, that didn't respond or reach out to schools, would get crossed off a schools' list. The response I will get several times a year is, "We thought we couldn't contact college coaches." But you can email college coaches. You can reach out to them through various mediums.
The rules that are set in place prohibit the ways that college coaches are able to communicate with you.
Not the other way around.
"We understood that..."
"Someone told us..."
"We thought that..."
This is how I typically hear things that aren't necessarily true. I can honestly say that they aren't hearing those things from me.
But battling this every season is normal. I talk about it when it comes to Quiet Periods and Dead Periods. Yes you can email schools within a Quiet Period. Yes, you can have phone calls as well (as long as you're old enough).
I say all of this just to say that knowing and understanding the rules is a really important part of the recruiting process.
Freshmen and Sophomores!
You need to be reaching out to schools so that they will come watch you play. If you are getting communication from schools through emails, camp invites or questionnaires, make sure you are responding to them. What better way to show interest in a school then to respond to them when they reach out to you?
If you have any more questions about what you should or should not be doing right now, please feel free to reach out!
Get organized with ProductiveRecruit! Use the same system that I use to keep track of all of my athletes.
