What To Do When Camp Is Over

It's certainly a busy time of year. We've got practices going on as teams prep for USAV and AAU Nationals. Pre-pre-tryout clinics are happening. Vacations. Lessons. Lake days. Plus you've got to plan what your summer looks like - with tryouts, college camps and your high school camp and tryouts!

With planning for camps there is even more to think about.

Which schools are most interested?

Where do you want to experience camp?

How many camps can you go to?

What are travel arrangements going to look like?

How much is that flight?

Lots of things to figure out. One thing that is often missed at camp actually happens AFTER camp is over. So much about recruiting is done from first impressions. First time a coach watches you; your first phone call; your first face-to-face interaction. You want to make sure you are capitalizing on these opportunities.

Be sure that you go up to the coach, introduce yourself and let them know how much you enjoyed camp!

Now, technically you can go up and introduce yourself to the coaching staff at anytime during the camp. You should make sure they know who you are when you arrive. But after the camp is really your opportunity to chat with them, let them know how much you enjoyed the camp, campus and working with the staff. It's a small thing, but it can have a HUGE positive impact on your recruiting experience. You also might have to wait to talk to the college coaches, but it's definitely worth it.

By doing this you're communicating how interested you are in that school. You're engaging with the coach face-to-face. You aren't going to get a ton of opportunities to have a ton of face-to-face with college coaches throughout your process, so this is one of those times you need to take advantage of your ability to do so.

Now, some coaches might not be willing/able to chat with you about the recruiting process as a whole in that moment. But if they do, then the waiting, nervousness and anxiousness you feel is going to pay off. Be prepared to ask at least one question and maybe even answer a couple questions from the coach.

How did you like it?

What did you think?

What was your favorite part?

There are dozens of athletes trying to get the same roster spot that you are trying to get. You're already at that camp, so that's good, but take advantage of the chance to talk to the college coaches face to face. You won't regret it.

Finally, it's important to interact with the college coaches throughout the camp. Be coachable. Try to do the things they are asking you to do, even if it's different than what you have learned before. Be open to new ideas! Respond verbally. A head-nod is great, but words are usually better. Meet the other committed athletes and athletes that are currently there. Leaving a good impression on athletes WILL trickle back positively to the college coach.

Good luck at camps this summer. Have fun. SMILE!
