Playing Conference Survivor

The announcement of 6 teams joining the American Athletic Conference (AAC), things just got really sticky for Conference USA (CUSA). CUSA has basically been purged and realistically is going to have to go after other schools to just stay afloat.

Remember that the AAC lost Central Florida, Houston and Cincinnati to the Big 12, so it makes since that they would be reloading next.

What's happened? Let's take a look at what has happened in the last few months to the conference, school by school.

Western Kentucky - Not moving yet, but there is a decent chance they head back over to the Sun Belt.

Middle Tennessee - staying put for now.

Charlotte - moving to the AAC

Old Dominion - staying, for now. Their volleyball program is new and will potentially struggle with any sort of move.

Marshall - staying put for now.

Florida Atlantic - moving to the AAC

FIU - staying put. Although I think this would make them the only Florida school in the conference. Not sure where else they could move to though.

Rice - moving to the AAC

North Texas - moving to the AAC

UTEP - staying for now, although there are two other Texas schools in the Sun Belt. Moving might be an option.

UAB - moving to the AAC

UTSA - moving to the AAC

Southern Miss - staying for now.

Louisiana Tech - staying for now, but there are two other Sun Belt schools in Louisiana. So a move could potentially make sense.

That leaves only 8 schools in CUSA. They would need to add more schools though to stay safe. If any other schools jump ship, they could be in real trouble. Liberty and JMU are looking at add themselves to an FBS conference apparently. It is likely that NONE of these schools are going to want to drop down to the FCS level. They will either need to pull from other conferences or just hope that everyone decides to stay. I think it's more likely that several of these schools head over to the Sun Belt. Which conference will be announcing more additions first?
