After spending several days in Vegas for Volleyball Nationals, I've been home and back from recruiting about 48 hours. I got back from Vegas on Saturday night about 11:30pm. Spent most of the day on Sunday doing family things and so far today (Monday) I have spent most of my day on the phone, answering text messages, talking to families and collecting all the info from Nationals to disperse to various athletes.
I've already answered this question a half-dozen times:
"Should I reach out to these schools this week or wait for them to contact me?"
Here are a few reasons to why my answer will always and forever be an extremely loud "YES!"
This is the difference between being proactive and reactive. Sit on your hands and wait or initiate the conversation. Be willing to make the first move.
College coaches are probably spending the next few days comparing notes or talking about what their next move is. Timeline; offers; who moves to where on what list. If you want to make sure you are in the conversation, then the best thing you can do is send a "HI, it's me, I'm still interested!" text to a staff.
Interest is everything right now. I'm usually answering questions from college coaches like, "what's her process look like right now?" or "Who else is she interested in?" things like that. Really, these questions come down to the notion of "Should I waste any time on this kid right now?" You can answer that question for them by reaching out first! Don't let them wonder or wander over to another athlete. Coaches want to know if they can get in the mix with an athlete and you can help yourself by communicating to those coaches that they are most definitely in the mix for you.
I know a lot of people think, "if they are really interested, they will reach out" and there is some truth to that. The way the recruiting process goes right now, 90% of D1 athletes have had little to 0 of a recruiting process. But NOW you can have back and forth with college coach. Now a college coach can text you back or call you back. You can reach out and get an answer. A helpful answer. Responses back mean there is some interest. But you might not get a response back if you never reach out to begin with.
Now is your opportunity to take control of your recruiting process. Don't get caught up in waiting or worrying.
If you want it, go get it.
Checklist: What to include in your message to college coaches
Brief introduction and reminder of who you are
Mention Nationals and any highlights
Express continued interest in their program
