One issue that I run into with athletes and families is they want to REALLY focus on just these schools. Maybe it's the 5 schools she had phone calls with on June 15th. Or maybe it's the 10 schools she got a camp invite from. Or maybe it's even 1 a school that realistically stands out as the best option. Regardless of your current recruiting situation, you need to keep an open mind going forward. Understanding the worst case scenario can be annoying and hard sometimes, but believe me when I tell you that those can sometimes play out.

I started telling the teams that I meet with that a school isn't interested until you actually make a visit to campus. That should realistically be one of our guidelines. Sometimes it means that we are doing more work today than we normally would, but the goal is visits and offers. The goal is NOT phone calls and texts; although those are steps we want to hit as often as we can.

I say all of that to throw out there this idea that many athletes and parents get while we are going through the process, and that is focusing on this ONE or TWO schools that "seem" really interested and in doing that we are pushing ALL the other opportunities to a third-string QB status. That means we stop paying attention to basically everyone else. Now, in all honesty, this is really easy to do. You get excited about a phone call with a great school that you're really interested in and it puts everything else on pause. But we MUST multitask as we are going through the process.

This means that WHILE we are having phone calls with schools and maybe even planning a visit, over the course of the several months (especially in the fall) we aren't completely ignoring other options or other schools that might be interested in us. Instead of ONLY focusing on a couple of schools, this is a great opportunity to send an email again to that school that maybe hasn't emailed you back or texted you back recently.

It's really easy to get tunnel vision in recruiting. Shiny objects can distract us. One conversation can shift our entire focus. One comment I keep coming back to with families and athletes is that you are going to go through this recruiting process once. The majority of the college coaches you are talking to have already gone through this process 100s of times. It's not that they don't care about you, but in general, the one conversation doesn't necessarily always mean as much to them as it might to you. Make sure that you aren't getting ahead of yourself in your process. It can and usually will take time. One conversation doesn't always seal the deal. Remember that there are always schools looking for athletes like yourself. If you get tunnel vision, you might end up missing out on a GREAT opportunity for you.
