You Only Need 1 Offer

This might not be a popular opinion, but...there it is.

To quote Coach Lisle, "All it takes is one coach that believes in you."

You only need one offer.

You only need one coach that is interested in you.

One school that is the right fit in the right situation. That is all you need.

"Should we take the first offer we get?"

I'm certainly not advocating for athletes to take the first offer that comes their way. That could be a terrible idea. You can also GET more than one offer. It's not a BAD thing at all to get more than one offer. This happens quite a bit actually, especially throughout the summer as multiple schools are trying to get the same athletes.

"Shouldn't we WANT to get more than one offer?"

Sure! That would be great. Unfortunately, one offer doesn't automatically roll into two offers. You have to ask yourself, "Where is the other offer coming from...and when?" Will you have to wait another 6 months to get that 2nd offer? Will that first offer still be there in 5 months? Wanting a second offer is a great idea, but it's not always a reality.

"Should we only go on ONE visit them?"

Certainly not. Go on as many visits as you can. Go to as many camps as you can. Limiting yourself on these two things (visits and camps) certainly hurts your chances to get recruited and get offers. I'm not advocating for putting ALL of your eggs in one basket either. That can turn out poorly also. You don't want to sit on your hands. You have an offer or you went on one visit, that's great. Who else are you talking to? Who else might be interested in bringing you out on a visit if they know that your timeline moved up a little bit? Go out and get that other visit or offer - just don't expect it. There are just too many athletes out there for you to be guaranteed 1 visit or 1 offer. Certainly getting 2 of each is more challenging.

One school.

One coach.

One offer.

That is all you need to play college volleyball.

Recruiting is not always something we have control over. We can certainly control things on our end. But we can't control program needs, if a coach is interested in us or who else is interested in a school! I have heard plenty of times in the last 6 years, "We are taking a local athlete for this position. She's been coming to our camp since she was 12." It's hard to beat that level of interest. Athletes from across the country are trying to get an extremely limited amount of roster spots (not scholarships). You can only control so much.

You should definitely try and get as much interest as you can. Go on as many visits as you can! Get 5 offers! Just remember that you only need 1 of those offers to be the great situation for you academically and athletically.
