...to send some emails! With a long weekend and no school, now is a great time to get started on those emails. Time is valuable, I totally understand that. It's hard to get time away from school, volleyball matches/practice and homecoming events. But with a long weekend for most athletes and potentially even some colleges taking a day off, now is a great time to connect with some college coaches, or at least spend some time researching schools and focusing on your list.

I have been knocking around this idea for awhile now. With the changes in the recruiting landscape over the last few years that include the new recruiting rules and the addition of the transfer portal, interest is still as important as ever. Because I have been misunderstood when it comes to things like this, I will first say that I think it's great anytime an athlete gets noticed or rewarded for their accomplishments. It's great when they get recognized for the hard work and dedication they put in to their sport.

As we have progressed through these new recruiting rules over the last couple of classes I have seen small changes here and there and a couple big changes that college coaches have made. Trying to pull back and look at this current recruiting class from as wide of an angle as possible, it seems that a majority of college coaches seem to be going in 1 of 2 ways when it comes to offers.

It's important to remember that at the D1 level there can only be 12 athletes on scholarship. If you go look at any D1 roster in the country, they are more than likely to have 15-17 athletes on the roster. That means that 25% of any D1 roster is made up of walk-on athletes. At the D2 level it's a little harder to figure out "who" or "how many" athletes are walking on because they can divide up their scholarships to everyone on the roster if they have the resources to do th

I went to an NHL game once live. It was pretty impressive. I had watched on TV for years and even been to a few college hockey games. Icing calls in the NHL have to get touched by a player. This means they are "sprinting" after the puck. They are REALLY fast. It's a speed that you can't quite grasp when watching the sport on TV.

If you're a junior or about to be a junior, you're now at the point where coaches can text, call and email you. Coaches should be in contact with you right now. If that's not the case for you right now, there might be a variety of reasons as to "why" that is the case and I will save that for another blog. But you should be talking to college coaches right now if you're actually in the recruiting process.

I'm an advocate for starting the recruiting process sooner. I think it helps. Some people might disagree with me and that's fine. I wrote about a similar topic last year as I was doing seminars at some clubs. You can read about that HERE .

Emails have a funny way of disappearing sometimes.

I often explain to families and athletes that recruiting is two sides of the same coin. Athletes and coaches often will do the same things to each other. Coaches will "ghost" athletes and athletes will "ghost" coaches.

It's certainly a busy time of year. We've got practices going on as teams prep for USAV and AAU Nationals. Pre-pre-tryout clinics are happening. Vacations. Lessons. Lake days. Plus you've got to plan what your summer looks like - with tryouts, college camps and your high school camp and tryouts!
