"Playing Time" Identity
It's a great sport and I love it, but the sport doesn't define me and it shouldn't define you.

Recruiting the Libero Position
*Originally posted September 26th, 2022 I have said in many of my seminars that the libero position is one of the toughest positions to get recruited in volleyball. It's probably a toss-up between the libero and the 6-2 setter as to which is actually the toughest. Either way you want to look at it, it's really hard to get recruited as a libero. I think this is true regardless of the level.

Playing in the P5 in 2023
Now I know that some (a lot) of this is going to change with all the craziness happening with conference realignment right now - I don't think we are done yet! - But I wrote about this back in 2019 and so I wanted to revisit some of these statistics and see what has changed potentially. To get a reference point, you can go read my "Playing In The P5" blog HERE .

We Need More Volleyball On TV
*Originally posted, April 18th, 2022. I am reposting this to start the college season because I think that when you have as many upsets as happened on opening day in a college sport that is followed by millions across the country and you get 0 coverage from the main sports media, it's fair to say we need to be discussing this more. This video link was shared with me multiple times on social media and emailed/texted to me by several other people. I think it's really good.

Where Did All the College Coaches Go?
What happens when the best player on your team makes a verbal commitment? Well, the mass amount of college coaches that were there, simply stop showing up. It turns out that all of those college coaches that were coming to your court were really only watching 1 athlete.

It Was Never Meant to Be Easy
One of the several issues that my former AD and myself ran into was the he apparently believed that every athlete SHOULD be able to play D1. When athletes weren't willing to put in the work, or didn't have what it takes to play at a high level, it wasn't their fault. But as many families have heard me say at seminars over the last couple of years, 95% of volleyball athletes across the country are NOT playing college volleyball at any level. 5% are. That statistic, in and

The Impact of the Transfer Portal
*Originally posted 5/8/2023 I have had this theory since we got into the club season and Triple Crown (2nd weekend of February) weekend started. It's certainly not written in stone as their are always TONS of variables and everyone's recruiting process is different. This does seem to be the general timeline though for D1 and D2 schools.

Three Things Going Into This Weekend
I was asked a great question by one of my clients today, "Jason what should I be focused on this weekend? What are college coaches wanting to see when they come watch me?" I guess she asked me 2 questions.

Thoughts From Orlando
I was in Orlando last weekend for the Sunshine Qualifier. It was a significantly better travel experience for me than the year before. I enjoy the Orlando tournament experience. Even though I'm about a mile+ away the weather is usually good and so walking to and from the convention center isn't an issue. There are also a bunch of food options, which is ALWAYS nice.

Articulate Your "Why"
I sat down with a family the other night to talk about their process. She wanted to know what she needed to do, work on and improve in to get recruited by her #1 school. Before we started that discussion, I asked her, "Why do you want to go to school there?" She looked at me with a surprised look on her face. She looked at her mom and then back at me with a 'isn't it obvious?' look on her face. It wasn't obvious. I can understand completely why any 16yo athlete would wa

It's Not Always About Height
This is one thing that I find plenty of families get wrong in the recruiting process. One of the biggest reason is that NCSA has created these "standards" on how tall an athlete needs to be in order to play at a certain level. These "standards" are misleading and in many cases flat out false. Looking at the numbers, you see that everything trends from tallest to shortest, with the tallest athletes playing at the highest level. This type of "trickle down" idea in recruitin

Are You Willing?
I am going to hit on one specific topic here, but I do think that it applies to PLENTY of other recruiting factors. Everyone is willing to sit the bench, learn and wait their turn...until they have to sit the bench, learn and wait their turn.

Recruiting the Setter Position
Along with the Libero position, I think that setters are one of the hardest to get recruited. To read my thoughts on getting recruited as a Libero, go HERE.
