5 Minute Recruiting - Does It Matter What Team You Play On?
I get this question a lot over the course of the club season. I have two answers. Listen to the podcast below to hear both. Looking for...

Thoughts from Orlando, 2024
This past weekend in Orlando was a good trip. It felt like a quick trip because of my late flight in on Friday night and my early flight back Monday morning. It was still a good trip though. I got to spend a bunch of time at various courts throughout the weekend. One benefit of traveling more than I have in past years is that I get to see my teams play more!

Please Address College Coaches By Name
*Originally Posted December 8th, 2023 I'm not great at remembering peoples names. Athletes I can almost always remember. Several times I would be texting my assistant during a visit, asking her the names of the parents that were on the visit with the athlete. Conversations really help. Interactions really help. Connecting the parents to the athlete always helped me: Jim and Pam = Suzie I could work backwards sometimes. Regardless, it was something I really had to focus

Thoughts From Triple Crown 2024
Triple Crown is such a great tournament. I know that there is a qualifier prior to this weekend now, but I don't think that changes anything. With TC being opening weekend for D1 coaches and because it combines most of the talent from across the country, it really is a top notch event. It's a crazy three days for me but I enjoy going each year.

Recruiting Trap - Notification Addiction

Recruiting Roadblocks - Lack of Guidance
I forget regularly that not every club has someone like me working for them. Many clubs have "recruiting coordinators" that help with recruiting, but usually these people have full-time jobs somewhere else; they have administrative duties at the club; or they also coach 2 teams for the club. Not that any of that is wrong, but it's different when I can spend 12 hours in the gym talking to college coaches, parents and athletes vs. other recruiting coordinators that aren't tra

It's NOT a 'One and Done' Process
*Originally posted 3/1/2022 I wish it was that simple. I wish different variables didn't constantly come up during the recruiting process. If you're expecting one article, blog post, phone call or meeting to be sufficient in helping you get through your recruiting process till the end, you're probably going to miss out or be lost at some point.

Imagine With Me For Just a Moment
I was giving a recruiting seminar at a local high school this past week. I realized too late that I was giving a 9am seminar to a group of mostly freshmen and I include a bunch numbers and statistics. I tend to include a lot of statistics in my seminars because I think that it helps put recruiting into perspective. Apparently it was too early for math that morning! Imagine this:

What is a "Quiet Period"?
*Originally posted 11/10/2022 Here is the podcast episode on this same topic - give it a listen! Be sure to "Follow" the PRI Talk podcast as well! I often talk about understanding and knowing recruiting rules for various levels or divisions. I think it's important to at least know and understand what is going on around you as you go through this process. I talked about this a lot during the pandemic as I would regularly hear from parents and athletes that they "couldn't ta

Email a D2 Coach Today!
Do you want to know where you can compete for a National Championship? If you missed it, earlier this week the NCAA D2 National Championship Bracket was announced. At any level it's a big deal to make it to the final field of 64 teams. If you have been around me for any length of time you know that I am a HUGE advocate for playing at the D2 level.

Just Touch the Ball
*Originally posted 9/23/2020 I don't have TV and so we almost never get to watch NFL games live. We used to go to DoubleDaves if the Broncos were playing in primetime so I could watch the games and the kids could eat pizza; that was always fun, but we haven't done that in a long time. I really only follow games through social media or live scores off of google or NFL.com.

Say What?!
*Originally posted 5/10/2021 I'm re-posting this because I'm having some back and forth with colleagues about recruiting services. Please be sure you are getting advice from someone who is in this on a daily basis. I talked to a parent this past week that received some really bad advice about recruiting. I won't share the complete context of the advice, but lets just say that there is a reason why I fight so hard against the big online recruiting services. I talk over th

How To Find Success In Recruiting
*Originally posted 5/19/2020 (Written during Covid, so besides that I think everything else applies here) There are lots of people out there want to knock us down and tell us that what we are doing isn't working. They want to tell us we failed and that we shouldn't even be trying. I'm not sure if any of you have ever had a boss that seemed to enjoy it when you failed, but I have.
