Let's Chat About the Phenom List
Because I have been misunderstood when it comes to things like this, I will first say that I think it's great anytime an athlete gets noticed or rewarded for their accomplishments. It's great when they get recognized for the hard work and dedication they put in to their sport.

Our Sport Is Not A Gimmick
This has been a new frustration for me this fall so far. It realistically hasn't bothered me before (I don't think) but as we continue this conversation about volleyball being on TV more, I think there is something we need to address.

Getting Rid of Doubles?
Someone on Facebook posted something about the need to get rid of the "doubles" call in volleyball. They apparently quoted 2 current D1 coaches; I say "apparently" because no context or reference was given). These two coaches apparently supported the idea of getting rid of the doubles call all together. Basically saying that the game had "evolved". I won't get into the coaches or their "arguments" in this blog post, I'll save that for my podcast, that you can listen to HE

Money Talks
I remember being in high school and having a bunch of friends that HATED the New York Yankees. Why? Because they WON. That was the bottom line. The reason I was given was because they "bought" championships. New York had the most expensive roster in MLB for a long time; they still might have one of the biggest. But the reason they won and were as successful as they were was because they bought the best players. Seems to make sense. In a league with "no cap" the rich h

New Recruiting Trends?
As we have progressed through these new recruiting rules over the last couple of classes I have seen small changes here and there and a couple big changes that college coaches have made. Trying to pull back and look at this current recruiting class from as wide of an angle as possible, it seems that a majority of college coaches seem to be going in 1 of 2 ways when it comes to offers.

Walking-On To A Program
It's important to remember that at the D1 level there can only be 12 athletes on scholarship. If you go look at any D1 roster in the country, they are more than likely to have 15-17 athletes on the roster. That means that 25% of any D1 roster is made up of walk-on athletes. At the D2 level it's a little harder to figure out "who" or "how many" athletes are walking on because they can divide up their scholarships to everyone on the roster if they have the resources to do th

Have You Watched Them Play?
I went to an NHL game once live. It was pretty impressive. I had watched on TV for years and even been to a few college hockey games. Icing calls in the NHL have to get touched by a player. This means they are "sprinting" after the puck. They are REALLY fast. It's a speed that you can't quite grasp when watching the sport on TV.

What is D1? - Part 1
This is a topic that comes up a lot with college coaches. Not just D1 coaches either; I have similar discussions with D2 coaches as well. One college coach and I were talking about this from the D1 perspective. Specifically, "What makes a school/program Division 1?" It might seem like a simple question, but I think it's something we need to discuss openly more and more because I'm not sure we really understand the differences.

The "Are You A Fit?" Checklist
*This ended up being less of a checklist. My goal is always to help parents and athletes with the recruiting process. I hope something like this is helpful as you evaluate where you want to play college volleyball. I'm not perfect by any means. There are lots of variables in recruiting - that is something that isn't necessarily mentioned in this post. If you've been around me the last 6 months you know that this is one of my soapboxes. I've talked about it with club coa

Why Do You Play?
Now, I don't watch football games anymore unless I get invited to a party of some sort. Still one of my favorite sports to watch on TV, but it's not really something I do anymore. I still love sports though! So when I heard that a tie between the Raiders and Chargers meant they would both make the playoffs, I was overly intrigued. The game being on Sunday Night Football I think added more to the intrigue. For me, the notion that the Broncos would be left out of the playo

I was never a "drill" person
I had a phone call with a former player this past week. She was wondering about some of the drills we used to do during practice and she was a little frustrated that she could only remember two. I laughed and said, "That's cause we usually didn't do drills. We just worked on whatever we needed to work on." Sometimes that might be a drill. Our serve and pass prior to matches and on game day were always the same. If I tried to do anything different, it either turned out a
