Film Highlights
When you look at much film and recruiting profiles as I do, you start to notice a lot of different variations of the same thing. It really doesn't matter what you have around the film, I'm still going to click on the first film I see in order to get as quick of an evaluation as I can. This falls under the "make their job as easy as possible" category. If we are making college coaches search everywhere and beyond for a highlight link, or your graduation year or whatever els

Have We Lost the Importance of the Campus Visit?
I get it. There is a lot going on. College coaches across the country are trying everything they can do to simulate as much of a visit as they can, without actually having the athlete on a visit. Of course, the athlete can still come on a visit if the school is allowing academic visits to campus, but not all are and so coaches are doing probably what they are all best at and adapting to the situation. Zoom calls with the team, professors, academic advisors and of course t

Are You "Three Months" Interested?
It's one of the big misconceptions or even pitfalls that I think parents and athletes get into during the recruiting process.

Effort
I tell all of my children that I don't really care about the outcome of their event or sport, just that they work hard and try their best. You're going to make mistakes and you're even going to fail, but that's how you grow. But the effort always needs to be there; we do things 100% if we are going to do them at all. They probably don't understand what all of that means yet, but that's okay, I will keep telling them anyway.

13 Days
I talk a lot about contacting your schools each week. It doesn't have to be anything huge like updated film or chatting on the phone. Just a simple email or text usually is good! It's the hardest part of this process though. You want coaches to make sure they know you are interested. It's also really hard to contact school every week! Especially if you have a list of more than 10. But once you get down to single-digits or a Top 5 list of schools, you need to be contact

Recruiting From Film?
How comfortable are most college coaches recruiting solely off of highlights and game footage? They aren't, not at all.

The College Scholarship Question
A lot of families will ask me "When is it okay to ask about scholarships?" I think there is a lot of confusion about this question and the appropriateness of asking it. It doesn't take long to google or go to some recruiting websites before you are hit with mixed messages about asking a coach about a scholarship. Even within the same recruiting website I found 2 blog posts that differed in their opinion about whether or not to ask about a scholarship. In my opinion, it's

Communication Is Hard But Silence is...
I'm not the best communicator in the world. I'm also not the worst. All of us seem to live somewhere in the middle to varying degrees. I know that in recruiting, coaches will always gravitate more towards those athletes they have good or great conversations with over the phone. It is very often something that can make it or break it in the first or second phone call. Poor communication can come off as disinterest from both sides. A coach can be just as guilty in this. S

What College Recruiting Rules?
I sometimes ask myself this question and wonder if I even understand any of the new recruiting rules. I guess I do understand them, but the application of these new rules has been mediocre at best. For the record I have never been a fan of the new rules. Would I love to see recruiting slow down a little bit? Yes. But the implementation of the current rules 1) doesn't do enough to actually slow down recruiting to the point where it is helpful; 2) it leaves both the PSA (

The Current State of Recruiting II
Last month I posted briefly about the current state of recruiting as it related to the idea of tournaments, qualifiers and possibly the whole season being cancelled. What was that going to look like moving forward and what you can do about it currently. I thought after 30 days in basic house arrest with our family of 6 I would give a brief update...although only some things have changed, they are seemingly some big changes.
